Q1: Juxtaposition

Dumas seems to like duality.  How does Dumas juxtapose pairs of characters, events, places throughout the novel and why?

  1. I think that Dumas does an excellent job at contrasting Marseille and the prison Dantes is imprisoned in. Marseille seems to be a bright and cheerful environment while the prison is depressing and horrid

  2. Dumas likes the duality between good and evil. He rewards those who were kind too him by giving them money when he gets out of prison and then he gets revenge on those who wronged him.

  3. I agree with Patrick. Dumas uses good and evil all throughout this book. Dantes uses different aliases to bring out the good or bad in people. I think Dumas does this to show who is on whosside. The good will be on Dantes side, while the bad on the antagonists side.

  4. He does and great job contrasting many things throughout the story. Good and evil is a common theme a great example is how Dantes changed to the Count. This shows how Dantes was good and Count is evil and how he gets revenge.
