Q6: Letters

What is the importance of the written word, specifically letters, throughout this novel?  What do the letters symbolize?

  1. They symbolize perhaps judgement or "the final say" in a matter. Back then there was no instant communication; letters were the quickest way of communicating. For Dantes, letters symbolize his freedom (which was burned by Villefort), his love (the letter he wished to send to Mercedes), and as a finishing touch on his wishes (letters to the two young gentlemen in Rome)

  2. I agree with Jared, that they symbolize judgement or "the final word". Letters like the one to that daughter that said to wait listen to Sinbad, or the resignation letter in a pouch on Morrel's desk. This was the way of commincating at the time so i don't think the message and symbolism was as clear back then as it is now.

  3. The letters help monte Cristo with his plot. He can assume multiple identities by writting letters like the one he sent as Sinbad the Sailor to Morrel's daughter
