Dantes could certainly not have pulled off the revenge plot without the teachings from Faria. The truth is that Faria taught Dantes what he knows, and the fact is Dantes would have killed himself if not for Faria. The fact is that Faria is an intricate part of Dantes' success
Faria turns Dantes from an uneducated sailor into a wise and educated man with much knowledge of the world. Also, if it wasn't for Faria, Dantes probably would not have escaped prison, found the fortune, or even realize who his the people that betrayed him are.
I believe that Faria's ailment serves as almost antithesis to the growth that Dantes is achieving. As Dantes grows stronger and smarter, Faria begins declining and heads towards his death. Dantes is changed by Faria for the better. He now can assume all his different aliases and do what he wishes: escape, find the treasure, and take revenge
Dantes has been transformed many ways in jail. He strays from the idea of starving himself after he meets Faria but the prison is still very dark for him. He is transformed intellectually as Faria teaches him and also changed in his intentions. He feels that he must get even and restore justice, which has been taken from his own life. I feel Faria helps but does not parallel his transformation.
Dantes learned many things from Faria like math, language, and philosophy, and Dntes looked up to Faria like a father figure. When Faria falls ill he makes it a dieing wish for Dantes to get that treasure and once he does he uses it for his revenge.
Dantes is strengthened mentally by Abbe Faria's teaching. He gains both a classical education and the ability to think logically. This allows for him to be more convincing as the God-like figure of Monte Cristo. However, as Dantes rises, Faria falls. His illness weakens and eventually kills him.
