Q13: Disguise

In which ways is an abbé the perfect disguise for Dantes?  In which ways not?

  1. Abbe Busoni is the perfect disguise for Dantes in multiple ways. For one, he is a priest, who could possibly think a priest would be faking or be a lie. This disguise is truly Dantes' best because the total time in which he uses it he can go anywhere without any sort of suspision

  2. Busoni is a great disguise because he can do no apparent harm under this fake priest. Also, edmond must have bought this position. This is simony. The priest is a huge shock because caderousse is so surprised that he had been let die by a fake priest

  3. An abbe is a perfect disguise for Edmond. It shows a contreversy. Edmond is a man who seeks revenge and is nothing like a priest. When he becomes an abbe, he gets the best of everything. His life as a priest is completely opposite from who he really is. No on would ever expext that this kind abbe would be Edmond Dantes full of revenge. The only reason it is not perfect is because sometimes the abbe does not act much like an abbe. He lets his friend Cadderousse die which I do not think that a real abbe would do.

  4. Abbe Busoni is a perfect disguise for several reasons. For one, it allows Edmond to gain the trust of the people who he is going to get vengeance on. Who would suspect a priest? Also, it shows Edmond's nice and benevolent side, while the Count of Monte Cristo shows his cold and vengeful side.

  5. a priest is a perfect disguise. no one would ever suspect a priest of doing anything wrong or even hiding something. he probably chose this deliberately for this reason. does he act like a priest while he is disguise, sort of. a priest probably wouldnt watch someone (caderousse) die and enjoys it, but he does seem to speak like a priest when he is is incognito of abbe busoni

  6. Choosing a disguise as a priest is very smart on Dantes part. In that time, more priests were around, and they were not suspected of telling lies, so he would never be questioned. He also feels that he is working for God, so a priest costume would fit his intentions.

  7. He can get around and do stuff that others would not be able to do. Also, he would not be suspected to do the things that he actually does, and people would believe him because priests are not supposed to lie.

  8. It is perfect because first of all he is a priest which provides a sense of innocence (this is just like his best friend in prison who was also a priest). This disguise gives him credibility and the people he questions feel nervous knowing that a priest hold some power and they respect this figure.

  9. It is the perfect disguise because no one would ever suspect a man in a priest disguise. Priests are supposed to be respected and nobody would ever question his authority or authenticity. This is also a good disguise for him personally because he had spent much of his time in prison with Abbe Faria, some of his "priestliness" must have rubbed of on him/

  10. The abbe is perfect for one important reason: their discussion symbolizes an actual confession. Caderousse feels guilty about what happened to Dantes and who better to confess to than a priest? Dantes predicts this and executes this perfectly

  11. The abbe was a perfect disguise for Dantes. He was able to find out many things he had missed from Caderousse while he was in jail. Also, it was a very safe disguise because no one would suspect an honest abbe of being a fake.

  12. It is a good disgiuse because Dantes was imprisoned with Faria who was a priest so Dantes took on the identity of a priest to connect himself futher with a man he considered to be his father. Also people confide into priests so it was good for his revenge ploy.

  13. The priest is a perfect surprise for Edmond Dantes. Priests were often the best educated and as such Dantes' knowledge would not catch anyone off guard. Being a priest in the two lands of Italy and France would also grant him great access to many of the areas that would otherwise not be available to him.

  14. One way that being the priest is perfect for Dantes is because of the fact that he lived with a priest for 14 years when he was imprisoned. Because of this he received an idea of how a preist should act, and his own personal sense of religious justice from his friendship. I do not see any reason that it was a bad idea.

  15. Being the abbe is perfect for Dantes because of the very nature of Dantes's quest. He is punishing those who ruined his life, and he cares for those who are less fortunate, just as God punishes the evil and cares for the poor. several times throughout the novel, Dantes says that he is acting on behalf of God or that he is administering god's punishment on his enemies. When he dons his disguise as a priest, Dantes is "acting for God".
