What are the strengths and weaknesses of the novel? (Keep in mind, while you are answering, that you are not reading it in the original language. To what extent can you blame or praise the translators?)
The strengths of this novel are the the way in which Dumas delves into the characters and really shows the true mind of the character. The weaknesses are the fact that the characters were are jumbled together and could have been space out a little bit better.
Alexandre Dumas did a very good job in his novel. His portrayal of the characters was done very well. I enjoyed how he made all of the characters fit. It was like a puzzle. At times it got very confusing but in the end it made sense. I also liked the way that Edmond learned from his revenge. After each time Edmond got revenge, he made sure that he did better on the next person.
We are reading a shortened version of the book, so i do not know what i am missing. The book is strong because it has a very intersting plot that makes the reader want to keep reading. The downfall of the book is that it is such an expanded plot, that there are many loose ends not visited before the end. Many characters are mentioned and important, but we do not see what happens to some of them.
strengths of this novel are that while everything may be confusing, when you put everything into perspective, it makes perfect sense and like brian said, is "like a puzzle". Weaknesses may be the unknowing of the years the Dantes spent between his escape and the beggining of his revenge. all in all, this was a very good book
The complexity of the novel can be both a strength and a weakness. For example, it is interesting how the author links together all the characters and every event is somehow connected to another event. However, this can also make it harder to read, and more difficult to understand.
Dumas puts the characters in a complex way. It can be confusing and considered a weakness until one can see that each character is connected to each other in a unique and important way.
His portrayed the characters in this novel veery well. He gave all the characters a meaning in the story and they fit according to the plot. Dumas kept us a little confused throughout but at the end all the pieces came together and started to make sense. I agree with Brian, Edmond actually learned from his revenge. After Edmond got revenge every time, he made sure that he did a better job on the next victim.
The strengths of the novel were found mostly in conflict. He really did have novel ideas. The realism of the conflict was so amazing down to the small details like Dantes' want to be moved to a different cell regardless of location, darkness, and depth. The weaknesses were not the translators' fault, but was in the translation. There is no intended alliteration. Some repetition was lost, and I'm sure that the novel lost some meaning from the French language. The translators are not to blame.
I think that one major weakness of this novel is its length. The book carries out over a long time, while the beginning is filled with events, the middle and end of the novel are long and slow. However one thing that must be understood is the different time period in which this book was written. Perhaps in that time period, people enjoyed long winded novels
another weakness of this story (the one we read) is that it is abridged. this puts everything into a confusing state because it may include too much detail or not enough from the original version
I liked the book but I thought that it was to long. It would have been better if it was shorter. Some of the back stories did not need to be told. It would have made the book more enjoyable if it was shorter and more to the point.
I really enjoyed this book. Swashbuckling ridiculousness, as Mr. Siuda calls it, is hard to get tired of. Obviously the language was a little bumpy here and there, and didn't have quite the flow that some other novels have, but one has to give the translators credit. It's a long book, and all in all, they did a top-notch job translating it.
